Motorcycle Repair: Misfiring, spark plug wire, fire ignition

Question
i have a 77 fxe that is stroked and has a single fire ignition . sometimes after out riding for a while it will start running on 1 cyclinder . it has happened before and after resetting the timing it took care of the problem for about 3 months . would the wrong spark plug wire be the problem ? or the ingition system gone bad and if so should i get a dual fire ignition ? could it be jumping timing ? if so what would be the cure ? thank-you for your time .

Answer
If the spark plugs wires are old and brittle then they need changed.
Your problem can either be a coil going bad or the ignition going bad. Your problem sounds heat related. When the bike heats up, either the coil or the ignition shuts down.
A single fire ignition is a little smoother than a duel fire and give you a little more horses, but its not that noticeable when riding. The cost of a duel fire is alot less, but to go back to duel fire you will have to get a new coil and ignition.
As to jumping time, the only way it can do that is if the geat ont he cam moves on the shaft of the cam, which is unlikely.
Good luck and happy riding
