Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow starter, motor carbon brushes, starter solenoid

Question
I have A 2000 Honda Shadow it will not start using the starter switch but can be rolled too a start, along with this problem the headlight will not work. All fuses seem to be fine.

Answer
Hi Bud,

Look for a loose or dis-connected electrical connector.

Disassemble the starter button control housing assy. and inspect the starter button parts. Look for evidence of corrosion, dead insects, spider webs, and other non-conductors here. I've found all of these more than once to be the source of such problems.

Inspect the starter solenoid. Contacts may be burned and not conducting.

Insspect starter motor carbon brushes. Brushes may be worn beyond service limits.

The headlight is part of the starter circuit. The light is designed to turn off when start button is depressed to allow maximum current for starter motor.

I return tech information files by email. There was no email address with question as requested in my instructions.
