Motorcycle Repair: Honda NSR125R 1999, honda nsr125r, air fuel mixture

Question
Its an import. The engine ceased going down the motorway. Head gasket was the problem, water had got in, slight signs of rust.

Replaced the head gasket, clyinder, piston and poiston rings. Cleaned power valve. Put engine back. Seemed to running Ok. but spark plug was continually being fouled. seemed mixture was too rich, burning more oil it seemed.

but also the acceleration was irregular, it lost power around 6000 rpm and would stop accelearting. it starts without choke and doesnt tick over.

im a student and cant afford to get it fixed by a high street mechanic. My father has mechanical knowledge/expr, but cant figure out what the problem is. We looked at the throttle cable, exhaust and carb...but cant find problem.

im trying to get a workshop manual for it, but cant find one. can u help please

Answer
Hi Rob,

I recommend contacting Honda directly for the NSR manual.

There's a tuning issue. The source may be rich pre-mix, incorrect air-fuel mixture (jetting), dirty carb, or an ignition problem.

I'll need to know more to adccurately diagnose the problem via text. Perform a cylinder compression and leak-down tests. Clean or replace the spark plug and air filter. Inspect the reed valve.
