Motorcycle Repair: intermittant spark, modual, test light

I own a 1998 fxds conv. sometimes when i try to start it there is no spark.i could try to start it for hours with no luck, or i could come back five minutes later and it will start right up. sometimes the spark will cut out while riding.usually it will start up again shortly.it is not as much a problem when warmed up and used very frequently, but that is no guarantee it wont happen. the bike runs fine but i just dont get to drive it as much because of this. it seems to be getting worse.

Answer
First, make sure you have a good ground at the battery and where it is grounded.
Next, when you dont get a spark, use a test light and check the coil. is it hot on one side? If not then you ahve a power problem or a short.
If it is then either the pickup or the ignition modual is bad.
