Motorcycle Repair: After a failed tank treatment?, steamboat springs colorado, rusty tank

Question
My "new" '77 Yamaha XS650D (3700 miles on it) had been sitting garaged for years when the previous owner aquired it. He had it for a year, never got it started but dealt with the rusty tank insides with some kind of coating (Kreem?). Now it runs like a champ after I cleaned the carbs and re-jetted for sea level...last time it ran was in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, I live in Santa Cruz, Ca., but there is a giant condom-like, partially delaminated thing floating in my tank and after a bit of highway riding I "run out of gas." It starts and runs right away after I pull to the side of the highway. After reading some of the other entries I'm going to check the gas cap breather, but am wondering how to get rid of the nasty floater. Can I take it to a radiator shop and have it cleaned and sealed without ruining the paint job? An amateur road-racing buddy of mine suggested filling it with screws, nuts, washers, wrapping it in sleeping backs and giving it the lapidary treatment in the clothes drier on an air-only setting. Thanks for your great forum.

Answer
Hi John,

If the tank was lined with Kreem, the product can be removed with Acetone.

Remove fuel cap and petcock (and any other tank parts. Seal openings with any means you have at hand. Buy a gallon of Acetone (About $10) and add a pint to the tank. Acetone works quickly, though alow time for all side bask in the chemical for a few minutes.

Drain and repeat until you suspect that all Kreme is disolved or removed.

Rinse tank with a water (garden hose works best). Empty water from tank and add another pint of Acetone to remove water from tank.

Immediately prep tank with new tank liner. I recommend "Red-Kote" for resealing the tank. Good stuff!

Reference your roadracing buddie...he's in the back of the pack and about to be lapped/black flagged. Don't listen to that guy. :)
