Motorcycle Repair: DREAM CLUTCH, clutch pack, bill silver

Question
BILL, I HAVE A 66 CA77E SER# 1012990 MY QUESTION IS IN REGARD TO A STICKING CLUTCH. I HAVE 5 FIBRE PLATES MICED AT 3+ CM 4 STEEL AT 1.5 CM AND 1 ALUM AT 3 CM. WHEN I REMOVE THE CLUTCH AND UNSTICK THE PLATES IT STILL STICKS WHEN I PUT IT BACK TOGETHER? WHAT IS THE PLATE INSTALLATION SEQUENCE? HOW CAN I FIX THIS?
               THANKS TOM

Answer
Tom, the thick PLATE A goes in first. followed by a fibre, then steel, then fibre, etc. There should have been some tiny fine wire retainers that hold the first set of plates in, which helps the clutch pack release easier. If the retainer wires are not in place, the clutch pack tends to stick together, making shifting and finding neutral much more difficult.
Check your thread and clutch lifter parts in the right hand engine cover, as they get worn easily and that reduces the amount of travel you can achieve to release the clutch pack.
