Motorcycle Repair: 1990 FXST, through bolt, hi4

Question
Mr. Wells,
Thank you for offering this information..  I have a 1990 FXST standard, there has been some head work (shaved) Comp cam and an hi4 ingition installed with python pipes.  Other than that it is purty much stock, (engine wise).  My problem, is on the right side of the main case just below the cylinders where the through bolt with the nut come threw the main case, there is a crack in the case just below that bolt that runs along the bottom of the 90 deg. ledge just behind the lifter blocks for about 1 1/2 inch, as much as I can see. I just noticed the crack yesterday when I saw the oil. I think that I know the answer to this question already but would like a honest anwer rather than what the dealer wanted, to sell a new motor. And that may be the answer but would value your oppinon.  Thank you for any help that you may offer.

Answer
No, you dont need a new motor. I have repaired alot of cases and it sounds like it just needs repaired. The problem is the cases would have to be split to repair it, but it would cost less than a new motor.
If you are interested, I can give you a price for the rebuild and repair of the case. Send me an e-mail at mike@cscycleservice.com if you would like a price. I rebuild motors and ship them all over the country.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
