Motorcycle Repair: 1972 FLH front forks, 1972 flh, fork oil

Question

I have a 1972 HD FLH with stock 41mm front forks. I suspect the forks are dry because there is no rebound damper what so ever. The guy that had it before me did poor maint. My question is once I pull off the nacelle to remove the fork caps is there a spring under pressure there. Also, how much oil should I put down each fork tube? I hope the oil helps. Thanks in advance for your help. Mark

Answer
Yes there is a spring under pressure. You will need to get the front wheel off the ground to do the work or the spring pressure will not let you put hte cap back on. remove the cap and at the bottom of the fork on the rearward side you will see a screw. remove it so you can drain the fork oil that is in there. Once it is drained put the screw back in and install 7 3/4 OZ of fork oil in each fork.
Good luck and happy riding
