Motorcycle Repair: Honda XL75 Electrical Problem, faulty components, electrical problem

Question
I have a '77 Honda XL75 and the battery is not being charged by the bikes electrical system. The bike runs good and the headlight/taillights all work when the bike is running. If I charge the battery overnight it will slowly discharge (2-3 weeks) until it is fully discharged. The bike runs with or without the battery fine.
What are the possible faulty components? I figure if the lights work when the bike is running the alternator must be OK?
Thanks for the help!

Answer
Hi Bear,

Get the service manual. It's the best $25 you'll spend on your MC.

The generator has a lighting coil and a charging coil. From the description given, I suspect the charging coil may be defective.

A loose or poor electrical connection may be the cause of the charging problem, too.

The lighting coil provides electrical current/voltage to illuminate the headlight only. It would be unaffected if the charging coil was faulty.

The service manual explains how to troubleshoot these simple problems and more. The manual will pay for itself with the first repair you make.

I'll glad help you, but I make reference to the manual. You'll need it to follow my assistance.

Check the resistance, continuity, and output of the charging coil. The specs are in the *!%#*^&% manual.

I return tech files by email. Remember to include an email address with question.
