Motorcycle Repair: Battery Not Charging 95 Sportster, ohm meter, voltage regulator

Question
Hello,
I just bought my first Harley and know nothing about it. When I take it out it runs great but when I get home the battery is dead. It just makes a clicking noise. It is a new battery. Do you think it might be the Voltage regulator? Thanks, Jeremy

Answer
The components for a charging system in a harley are a battery, wires, stator and a voltage regulator. You have replaced the battery so that can be elimanated. Check the wiring coming from the voltage regulator first to make sure its good. There is no test for the voltage regulator, but there is a test for the stator. You need a OHM meter and a AC volt meter to do the test. If you have these let me know and I can tell you how to test it. If not then you need to take it in and have it tested.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
