Motorcycle Repair: Harley Electrical, battery connections, battery problem

Question
Dear Mike,
Wow. what a great and fast service. You guys are great.  Well I checked the grounds, everything seems to be fine.  I reinstalled the new battery and same thing. Not enough juice to light the lights up very much and not enough to turn the starter.  I removed the battery and hooked up my charger/starter to the lead wires and she fired right up.  Could it be a bad battery even though it is brand new?  Could it be that the jumper battery has more power, thus able to turn int over?  Any suggestions?

Question -
I own a 2003 Road King with very low milage. (1500 Miles)  I went to start it this year and the battery seemed dead. Since it had been sitting over the winter I put a new battery in. The new battery was completely charged but doesn't seem to have enough power to start the bike.  Just to make sure it was charged I put a charger onto the battery and the lights came up brighter and the bike started fine with the charger in "Start" mode.

When I disconnected the charger, the bike died.  The bike will only run with the charger attached and dies the second I remove the charger.  What do you think is the culprit?

Thanks,
Tom

Check your battery connections at the battery as well as at the negative end to the ground. Sounds like you have a bad ground.

Answer
You can have a bad battery even though it is brand new. I would have it tested  and see if its bad. You say you tried a charger/starter to the system. I dont know how many amps it is, but it might be more than the battery puts out, but go with the battery problem first.
Good luck and happy riding
