Hello,
It's been a LONG time since I've ridden or worked on bike. I recently came across a deal on a 1980 Sportster XLH. It runs intermittantly, doesn't always have spark and when it does start it will only run for about 5 or 10 minutes. It was stored in a garage for the last year and a half. I put a new battery in it and it turns over everytime but doesn't start all the time. I've checked all the 12v systems and they all seem to be getting the proper voltages. What am I missing? Looks like the guy put a new coil, plugs and wires on it prior to storing it. Need to get this thing road worthy soon.

Thanks
Geno

Do you have points or electronic in the bike?
Mike

Looks like it's electronic, went looking for points and found a plate with a sensor on it. There is a wire from there to a control module at the front of the bike.

Answer
Its either a bad pickup senser or modual. The pickup senser is the one under the plate. You are not going to be able to test either one for it takes a special harness. I would suggest you install a new ignition, like a Dyno ignition and you can get ride of the ignition modual.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
