Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Yamaha Midnight Maxim, safety switches, hi matthew

Question
The 1987 Yamaha Midnight Maxim is killing whenever I let out the clutch. If I give it more gas it still kills.  It absolutely will not run with the clutch released. I rode last year with no problems and did not feel anything that led me to belive that the clutch was slipping or that there was a problem with the clutch.  Could there be something else to look for.  Obviously the bike is old and I don't want to put a lot of money into diagnostics if I can help it.

Answer
Hi Matthew,

If you don't have the service manual, get a copy. It will help you maintain and troubleshoot problems with the Maxim.

Check safety switches such as the clutch sw. and side stand sw. for proper operation.

Check switches for continuity. Disassemble switches and inspect for corrosion. Clean or replace as necessary.
