Motorcycle Repair: 83 kaw 1100 carb problem, air fuel mixture, mikunis

Question
i have the cv 34mm carbs stock.i put in 127.5 main jets.when riding at 1/4 throttle it seems fine. when full throttle it bogs down.there is a screw right behind the main jet on the mikunis. what is that for and how do i set that. could that be the problem. if so help me.i also have an aftermarket header and in.filters on the bike.i believe these were the stock jets that came original on the bike.if possible send me pics from a clymer on the carbs.thanks, brian

Answer
Hi Brian,

The 127.5 main jets are very large for that application and likely causing an excessively rich air-fuel mixture. Hence the bogging when you try and accelerate.

Instead, try using 122's or 120's for main jets as a base line and tune from there. Make one change at a time when tuning to know what effects each change has made. Carb tuning often requires removing and re-installing the carbs numerous times before the air-fuel mixture is correct.

The pilot jets are busy at 1/4 throttle, not main jets.
Main jets working range is just beyond 1/2 throttle opening, to full throttle.

You should buy the service manual before attempting such work. It may cost $30, though may save you hundreds fixing mistakes. I would have returned tech files, but there was no email address with question as requested.
