Motorcycle Repair: belt drive, rear pulley, shoe nail

Question
probably silly question but i just bough a lo mile 98 fatboy and noticed what looks like the head of a horse shoe nail on the rear pulley-sprocket---looks like a place was cut so the belt would fit over it.  Is it to keep the belt in place or has someone tried to screw with it.  I had a problem with some kids last week so I'm paranoid now.
thanks

Answer
Remember, no question is a silly question, its all a learning process!
The nail was probably picked up when riding the bike. What you need to do is remove the nail so there is no more damage to the belt. Then inspect the belt. If there is a small hole in the center of the belt, then it will probably be alright. If the belt has s cut all the way to the edge of the belt, then it will have to be replaced.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
