Motorcycle Repair: Dismantling CA77 square type shocks, damper rod, eye screws

Question
Hi Bill
I need to strip the square type shocks on a CA77.
On most round type shocks you can compress the top and bottom covers so the two round collets at the top can be prised out. The CA77 type shocks don't have any collets.

Any help would be appreciated. On the same subject, any idea's for a replacement for the front shocks. (They fit inside the pressed steel forks. Mine seem to have very little damping.

Kind regards

Answer
Paul, the top shock eye screws onto the end of the damper rod. You need either a strong friend and a vise or a Honda shock disassembly tool that can catch the edges of the shock cover enough to dipress it from the top eye. There is a 17mm lock nut under the the top eye that keeps it from unscrewing itself while you are riding.

Depress the shock cover, slide in the wrench, put a big rod or shaft through the shock eye. Turn the shock eye counter clockwise, holding the wrench firmly. Unscrew the shock eye from the damper rod and release the shock cover!

Sorry no one has ever come up with suitable front dampers. I even asked a custom shock builder and the parts are too small for them to replicate.  Maybe someone in the UK can start their own Dream shock business!
