Motorcycle Repair: Rod knocking 72 shovelhead, shovelhead, flh

Question
While riding my 72 FLH down the highway at 55mph I hear a loud squealing out of the right side of the engine. Soon after the squealing starts the motor starts to knock. I suspect the oil pump went out and starved the motor of oil. The engine will still turn over and fire, however it runs terrible and knocks. It also puked oil after being shut down. Question is, how much for a bottom end overhaul to include rods, oil pump, etc. Also could the top end be affected by this failure?, Have not disassembled yet. Thanks for your help, Mark

Answer
Sounds like you have a rod that went out. As to the cost, its different all over the country, so its hard for me to say how much its going to cost. In my shop I charge around $1500.00 for a motor rebuild, but that depends on the parts needed. I have rebuild and shipped motors all over the country, so if you are interested I can give you an estimate. You can write me a mike@cscycleservice.com if you wish. Yes, the top end could have been affected, but you wil know that when the motor is taken apart.
good luck and happy riding
Mike
