Motorcycle Repair: carb problems?, bill silver, best bet

Question
I've just picked up a 1983 Kawasaki KZ750N spectre. It starts right up, idles rough(unless choke out all the way) and rolls out rough in 1st gear. All other gears shift through smoothly at higher RPMs. I've sprayed in some carb cleaner...any other suggestions?

Answer
Steve, if the bike has been sitting for a long period the gas in the carbs has turned into awful gunk inside. If you are lucky, you can mix up some Yamaha Carb cleaner solution and pour it down the fuel lines, let it sit overnight and drain it out again.
I'm sure that some of the idle jets are plugged, as well as blockages to the main jets and/or emulsion tubes. A carb overhaul is really the best bet to make it run correctly, as long as the compression is okay.
Spraying carb cleaner in the throats won't do much and if you put too much down the fuel tank the o-rings will swell up and you will have to replace them all.
If you are driving it with partially blocked main jets, you stand a chance of seizing some pistons due to lean mixtures. FYI
