Motorcycle Repair: magna problem, vacuum petcock, engine vibration

Question
hi Bill i own a 82 honda v45 750 magna and it wants to bogg out and stall on me when i go to take off in first then all of a sudden it will grab and take off , sometimes does it when i switch to second gear.Allways does this when the engine is cold and sometimes when the engine is warmed up.i have had the carbs cleaned but the problem is still there.Do you think the carbs need to be synched or is there another problem.I would apprecite eny help.           thanks.

Answer
Steve, there are lots of possibilities depending on the condition of the engine, miles on it, and equipment installed. If you have changed the mufflers, the carbs may be too lean now. If the carbs were cleaned, make sure all the jets were in the right positions. A lot of them are jetted differently front to rear cylinders.

There are air cut valves on the carbs, that can go bad giving a rough idle due to constant air leak. If the carbs were cleaned they definitely have to be synchronzed.
You could have intermittent spark unit problems where you may be dropping two cylinders momentarily. Check the coil leads through the plug connectors for the resistance values, which should be similar on each side. Check all your wiring connections for some kind of loose connection that is being affected by engine vibration.
If the bike has a vacuum petcock, it can also have a bad diaphragm that will cause a vacuum leak, plus reduce the fuel flow to the carbs.
Try a fresh set of spark plugs, too.
