Motorcycle Repair: 1994 honda shadow vt1100c, spark plug wires, vacuum hoses

Question
I am having trouble with accellerating.  The bike runs fine at idle and slow cruising,  but bogs down when I try to accellerate, and also at high speed. The carbs were cleaned last year and the main jets replaced, they were dismantled and clean this year and seemed o.k. the fuel filter hs been replaced and  the fuel pump has been checked.

Answer
Mike, a little research shows that there is a possibility that the main jets on front and rear carbs are different on some models. If you got them switched during the carb rebuild process, then you would have symptoms such as those you describe. If not, did you replace the exhaust system with something that was not OEM? That generally causes the bikes to run lean and you will have to install a jet kit to compensate for the increased airflow through the motor.http://www.pegmonkey.com/node/575

Be sure that that they are synchronized properly when all of this is done or you will still have acceleration and cruising speed issues.

There is an air cut (anti backfire valve) on the side of the carburetor. If the diaphragm gets punctured, it will cause a big air leak, leaning out the carburetion.

Make sure that all vacuum hoses are connected properly for the evaporative control system and that whatever they are connected to is functioning.

Honda twin lead coils have been known to fail or leak voltage at the towers. Check the resistance values at the coil primary sides to see if they match and check the resistance values of the all spark plug wires through the plug caps and compare them to each other.
