Motorcycle Repair: Honda Motorcyle, emery paper, brake caliper

Question
We live by the ocean and the front disk of our 1987 Honda 700 has rust on it, Do we have to take it apart to clean it or is there a product that will clean it when it is together

Answer
Betty, you can use a rough Scotchbrite pad on it, some 300-400 grit emery paper or some 0-00 steel wool. Just do a section at a time, move the bike a bit and do the rest.
You can spray it down with some brake cleaner, but it is mostly for grease/brake fluid residues on the disc.

Be careful that the caliper hasn't seized up from sitting. If you apply the brakes rolling the bike around the yard and it becomes hard to move, then the brake caliper will need overhauling. Moisture from the ocean can work its way into the brake fluid system, so a good flush/bleeding is also a good idea.

If you don't keep the fuel tank full, condensation can form inside and the water will work its way down inside the carburetors.
