Motorcycle Repair: oil filter replacement, brand new bike, manifold gaskets

Question
I have a new 2005 yamaha xv1100 motorcycle with 600 miles time for the first oil change. Question do you have to remove the exhaust pipes to get to one screw to take off the oil filter cover. If so are there gaskets on the exhaust pipes that will need to be replaced?also i have intermittent backfire in the carbs when i quickly rev the engine not everytime but sometimes is it the plugs or do i need valves adjusted or carbs sychronized thanks james once again it is a brand new bike

Answer
Hi James,

I have zero experience with this new model. Too new to have any come thru my shop.

Visit Yamaha's website: "www.yamaha-motor.com" and view parts michrofiche.

The exhaust manifold gaskets should be replaced if the pipes come off. Gaskets in the mid to rear sections are reusable if not damaged. See all parts at the above listed website.

The backfiring (as described) is normal.
