Motorcycle Repair: Gas cap, gas cap, gas tank

This is going to sound like a stupid question but I have a gas tank cap that locks.  Some kind of spring. Did not want to force it.  Its broke and the key does not open the gas cap.

What do I do?  Force it off and get a new cap?  

Is there a secret way to get it off?

Can't ride..

Remember, no question is a stupid question. Its all a learning process!
Check with your local dealer and see if they have a master key or any advice on how to get it off. If that doesnt work then your going to have to break it off and get a new one.
