Motorcycle Repair: Fluid Maintenance, yamaha yzf1000, clutch fluid

Question
I have a 1997 Yamaha YZF1000.  Getting ready to service the fluids on my bike.  The brake and clutch fluid I can find information on.  My question is regarding the antifreeze.  I've found with my Japanese cars I have to be very careful with what antifreeze I use do to certain corosion inhibitors that the larger parts store type antifreezezs use, (Prestone, Zerex etc.)  The OEM calls for the antifreeze to contain no silicates, no amines, and no borates do to the fact that those inhibitors can be harmful to the water pump and cause it to fail prematurely.  Concerning my motorcycle, do I need to purchase the "Yamaha" coolant for my bike, or do you recomend with your experience to just use any of the cheaper equivelants?

Answer
Hi Bryan,

I recommend Yamaha's coolant, though you can find name brands that will work. Compare label ingredients before buying.

It's "important" to purge the cooling system of air anytime the coolant is changed or the system is opened (minus the rad cap). Use, borrow, or rent a cooling system purge tool from the local car parts store. MityVac brand, Air-Evac tool is my choice, about $90 on line.

Cooling systems are designed to be air-free. Air lowers the boiling point of the coolant and may cause engine damages if air is trapped around the water pump (no circulation).
