Motorcycle Repair: 95 MOTOR,, head gasket leak, eagle pistons

Question
Mike,
I am stumped. I just installed on my 2002 electra standard, twim 88 motor, a set of 1550 screaming eagle pistons, cams, mikuni carb and adjustable ignition module(sreaming eagle),adjustable pushrods, lifters, and what should be a fairly simple job, but when I started the bike within a mile I had a head gasket leak. I used a fiber gasket so I went and bought a screaming eagle head gasket(metal) and installed it and within 5 minutes I had a head gasket leak, I shut it down and opened it again, I thoght I might have had to much lock tight and was getting a false reading in torque? I cleaned it up and torqued it down to 18lbs and then the 1/4 turn... and bang again a leak, I cheaked the heads with a straight edge and heads and juggs were good, I dont know what to check next? do I get another type of head gasket? am I torqueing it to much or to little, my old shovel head I used to torque it down much tighter than the recommended 14lbs on this motor.

I appreciate any help, I had to walk away for a day or so..
thanks

Answer
First, dont use locktight on the headbolts. Clean them and just use a little oil on them. Make sure you use the tightening sequence. Looking at the spark plug side, go 7-9 lbs at the right bolt, then left bolt, then, looking at the other side, left bolt, then right bolt. Now go 12-14 lbs with the same pattern. Then a 1/4 of a turn in the same pattern.
If you keep blowing gaskets and you know that your cylinder and head is square, then you need to replace the head bolts and studs as one of them might be streached.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
