Motorcycle Repair: yahama v star 1100 rear gear oil leak, pressure release valve, weight oil

Question
My rear left side is leaking gear oil at times.  the oil is leaking despite the crome cap cover on it.  The leak is located in the 12:00 position on the left side of the bike around the middle of the tire.  I think the part that is leaking is a pressure release valve.  Why is this leaking and how do i fix it.  or replace this air valve

Answer
Hi Salvatore,

The leak as described is common. It is considered normal as long as the final drive hub oil is at the recommended level, and the specified type and weight oil is used.

Seepage indicates you ride well and often. : )

To learn more about the final drive and more, I recommend the Service/Repair Manual. The manual has illustrated procedures on all repairs for your V-Star, and will pay for itself with the first maintenance you perform.
