Answer
Hi John,

You'll need to get the service/repair manual and learn about your 30 year old KZ. Those are classics!

Check cylinder compression to know the condition of the engine. Do a leak-down test if compression is low, or any two cylinders have a 10% difference in readings. See service manual for compression service limits.

The clutch and kick starter are related. The kickstarter is designed to free-wheel if the clutch lever is pulled in. There'll be some resistance felt, but the gears are not doing work.

If compression checks ok, and the kicker just doesn't seem to work properly, then the clutch may need serviced and/or adjusted.
