Motorcycle Repair: starter replacement, bill silver, gl1200

Question
I need to replace the starter on a 1986 Honda GL1200 Goldwing, I have the service manuel and it dosen't seem to be a big deal, however when I went to buy the starter the local dealers are making a big deal telling me that it is a huge job. Now I am not sure if I want to tackle the job myself. I have a complete set of tools and have been working on cars for many years. Could you please tell me if there is anything I should be aftaid of. The labor cost I was quoted for about $500.00.

thank you

Gary

Answer
Gary, I wouldn't go in w/o a manual for guidance. I have no direct knowledge of the difficulties for replacement of the starter motor...

sort of mentions that they are known to have issues, but doesn't say how to replace it.

Perhaps you can get more from these links.
