Motorcycle Repair: Brakes, brake caliper pistons, piston seals

Question
I have a 1985 Yamaha Maxim 700.  The front brake line started smoking this morning and is very hot to the touch.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Pauline,

I suspect one of the following: The operator rides the brake; or the brake caliper pistons are sticking-causing the brake pads to rub the discs, and brake fluid to boil.

Remove brake caliper(s), disassemble, and inspect. It's common for brake fluid to gel and eventually crystalize in and around the caliper pistons (pucks). There's usually two rubber piston seals that resemble o'rings, but with square edges. thoroghly clean the contamination from the calipers, replace brake pads, and inspect discs for evidence of warping.
