Motorcycle Repair: Valve Adjustment (Honda VTR1000F), honda vtr1000f, honda superhawk

Question
Mr. Shively:  I just purchased a used 02 Honda Superhawk with 5500 miles.  The manual says the valve spec is .006in +/- .001 (intake) and .012in +/- .001 (exhaust).  Question #1:  Does this mean anything between .004 and .008 (intake) and .010 and .014 (exhaust)is okay, or should it be closer, (i.e. if a .007 fits but a .008 doesn't, actual clearance might be .0075 which is greater than .006 +/- .001).  Question #2:  Is it true that valves get tighter over time, and therefore, if I have the time, would it be wise to adjust the valves to the loose end of the spec to prolong the interval to the next adjustment?

Thanks,
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

0.004" to 0.007" on the intake
0.011" to 0.013" on the exhaust

0.0075" is on the loose side, and may make tapping sounds. Loose clearances do not harm the engine (within reason). Tight clearances cause damages.

Yes. It's true that valves and related parts wear and tend to tighen clearances. Your idea of setting the valve clearances on the loose side is okay, though it's important to continue to check clearances at recommended intervals.

Very good questions, thanks.
