Hi
I am putting together a basket case 56 pan and need to know the orintation of the oil lines from the tank to the pump. My tank has to outlets in the top R/H  front corner and one in the lower R/H rear. I suspect that I have a shovel head oil pump as there are three outlets on it, one upper one and two lower on the pump. When I filled the tank with oil it all leaked out of the cases inside the primary(through a vent I hope, so I'm thinking and hoping I have the input line on the wrong ontlet and the oil is by-passing the pump and filling the cases. Any help will be appreciated.

On the tank. the lower fitting is the oil into the motor. Looking at the front of the tank the upper one on the right is the vent and the one on the left is the return.
On the oil pump. You might have a aftermarket oil pump. The shovel pump has the two outlets on the top, not the bottom. Look on it and see if you can see any name on the pump and let me know.

Mike,
Ok I should look closer at things. The top outlet is acually the vent in the case. There are two outlets on top of the pump. Which one is in and which one is out?

Answer
Sorry I  have to ask a question, but there are two nipples on the top and one on the bottom?
If this is the case the it should be as follows, as long as you are sure its a shovel pump.
The lower one is the inlet to the pump. The one on the right is the return to the oil tank. the one on the left is the breather outlet. There should be another one close to it that is the return fron the chain.
To be sure, after running the lines, start the bike and looking in the tank, make sure you have oil circulating. You should see the oil being pumped back into the tank.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
