Motorcycle Repair: wheel bearing race, shade tree mechanic, wheel bearing

Question
1980 HD xls. Is there a safe way for the shade tree mechanic to replace the wheel bearing race in the front and rear wheels?

Here's another wheel question. I seem to be having a hard time finding the oil seal for the rear wheel. The one I pulled from the wheel is 1/2 thick whereas the one I purchased at the HD dealership is closer to 3/8. Is it possible to get one just like the one I pulled from the wheel? The rear wheel is laced but the hub assembly is like that of the cast wheel shown in the factory manual except that the spacer is like that of the laced wheel shown as #7 in the factory manual. I'm fairly sure the previous owner changed from a cast wheel to laced and somehow interchanged parts.

Answer
I once replaced a race in a wheel, while I was on a long trip, on the side of the road with a screwdriver and a rock! I wouldn't recommend it however.
You changing the race will require having a race puller and driver. Problaby somthing you dont have. Also, you need to check the spacing in the bearing once the race is installed to be sure that you have enough play so you dont burn up the bearing. You can remove the wheel and have it done for you at a shop and then install the wheel yourself.
The seal you are refering to, the 1/8 inch difference is not going to matter. Its probably just a different manufacture of the seal that harley is using at the time
Good luck and happy riding
