Motorcycle Repair: CL77 Idle Problems, engine repair manuals, valve clearances

Question
Hello Mr Silver,So good to talk to you.I've heard so much about you.I have both your restoration and engine repair manuals for 250 and 305 hondas. Thank you.I have a 1967 Honda CL77,have recently set the valve clearances, set the timing with new pionts, thoroughly cleaned the carbs and installed new rebuild kits.Replaced the cam chain tensioner.replaced the condesor and plugs, rebuilt the petcock and installed original air cleaners, also have set the carb float levels.                          My problem is this, after having all this work done at a local shop,I found that when I slowed to a stop, the engine RPM;s decreased and the engine would die as I came to a complete stop.If I gave the engine a little throttle just prior to the stop,it would continue to idle.I found a small amount of black smoke from the pipes.Just today, I went to start the engine and found it was very flooded, could'nt get it started. The plugs were very wet and black with soot. Am not sure of the size of the slow jets that have been installed. When it does run it runs great.I have been working on this problem for some time, can't seem to get it right. love this old bike and won't give up. Thank you for your time. If you need more info please let me know.

Answer
John, thanks for buying the restoration guides. Please do remember to set the timing with an automotive timing light, engine running, unless you spring for the E-ignition.

I suspect that you used some Keyster repair kits and we have found them to be less than accurately calibrated. For best results, I would suggest sending the carbs to Ed Moore in TX for a thorough rebuild and adjustment. It sounds like your float levels might be a little high, coupled with some fat idle jets and timing shifts, these things will all stack up into a big problem. We have also found that Keyster kits have bowl gaskets that will interfere with the floats during operation.
