Motorcycle Repair: Harley Oil Problem, harley sportster, oil level

Question
Hello,
I have a 1999 Harley Sportster XLH1200. Last fall, I checked the oil after a ride while the engine was still hot and when I pulled the dipstick plug out, oil started spilling out of the tank. I checked the manual and realized that I had always checked the oil when the bike was cold. The manual said to check it when the bike was hot. I figured that I had overfilled it, so I changed the oil and filter. I thoroughly warmed the bike up and then drained the oil completely, changed the filter and put 3 quarts of oil back in the bike. After warming the bike back up and giving the oil time to settle back in the tank, I removed the dipstick to check the oil level and when removed the oil started overflowing out of the tank again. (I checked that all the oil had been drained out of the tank before filling it back up.)
What should I look for to be causing this, or is it a problem?  I have changed the oil in the past, and the bike will use about a half a quart of oil every 500 miles. My friends never notice that the bike is smoking and there are no leaks anywhere. So where is this oil going?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!               Thanks,  Don Hager

Answer
There are only three places the oil can be, either in the tank, the bottom end or the ground. I would suppect the bottom end has the oil and when you fill it it is being pumped back into the tank causing the over filling. Your check ball or spring in the oil pump might be bad, so yuour going ot need to get it checked.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
