Motorcycle Repair: 73 CL 350, honda cl 350, keyster carb kits

Question
I have a 73 Honda CL 350 that I'm trying to bring back from the grave.  There is a small amount of rust in the fuel tank that I would like to remove and then coat the inside of the tank.  My question to you is "How can I remove that rust?"  Are there any ole motorcycle tried and tru ways to go about this or will I just have to send the tank out to someone?

Thanks,
Mac

Answer
Mac, various substances will remove the rust... simple ones and more complex ones.

White vinegar is one...

Most anything with phosphoric acid.. Metal Prep from the auto body shops.

Rusteco sells a solution in a bottle or you can send in the whole tank for treatment.

POR-15 is a tank treatment and sealing kit.

Yamaha makes a nice fuel tank cleaner.

KREEM is often seen in motorcycle shops.

Be sure to rebuild the petcock, clean/replace the fuel lines.. use metric fuel hose for less hassle. Then, down to the carbs, making sure that the carb diaphragms are okay as you are cleaning the rest of the parts. Be wary of the KEYSTER carb kits as they can be more of a hinderance than a help due to inaccurate materials.

Clean the spark advancer behind the points.

Give it a good tuneup per Honda specs and it will probably come back to life again. Good for you to make the effort.
