Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Ignition, electrical diagnosis, electrex usa

Question
I have an '83 Yamaha Maxim 750 with about 3500 miles on it. It recently became hard to start, now I've found weak spark on all 4 cylinders. When it used to run, I noticed a fluffy black deposit on all plugs. I thought it might be running too rich, but now I think my whole problem is the weak spark. A friend suggested I replace the stator, but I'm reluctant to start replacing parts on spec. Any thoughts? Thank you very much!

Answer
Hi Chuck,

Your troubleshooting is spot on and should be confirmed by electrical diagnosis. Follow testing procedures in the service manual and find the defective part(s).

True mechanics do not hastefully replace parts in hopes of repairing the problem. We learn the source of the problem and then replace only the defective parts. : )

I prefer to use quality replacement parts from Electrex USA. www.electrexusa.com Visit their website and check out the troubleshooting chart.
