Motorcycle Repair: Low budget Harley??, horror stories, old bike

Question
I have recently been tempted to splurge on a bike and really
would like to own a Harley. Unfortunately my budget is only
$5000 so early-model Sportsters seem to be my only option. I've
heard many horror stories from cycle enthusiasts warning of
getting involved with cheap, old hogs that break down easily. Is
this an over-blown concern? Can I trust a Harley for sale under 5
grand? I find it hard to believe that all 70's & 80's Harleys break
down regularly but I could be wrong.

Thanks,
Paul

Answer
The early bikes were not known to break down. It was how they we treated that made them break down. As long as preventive maintance is done the early bikes will be reliable. One thing you have to remember is you are buying a very old bike, so like a old car you have to check it out very well to make sure everything is in good condition. I would suggest that when you find one, have a mech check it out for you before purchacing it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
