Motorcycle Repair: 87 honda hurricane 1000 rattaling noise, honda hurricane, pretty noise

Question
87 honda hurricane 1000 engine noise. I was told it is a comin noise with this year. heard from Honda dealer there was a recall or a service notice at on point. is there some how you can find out about any service notice? i was told it could be cam chain tensioner, or alternator chain tensioner. it is pretty noise at start up but when bike warms up the noise pretty much goes away. bike runs great. will it hurt to keep riding it like that?   Thanks.  Ray   karrbrown@netzero.com

Answer
Hi Ray,

I would have to hear the moise to give you an accurate diagnosis. I suspect it may be caused by excessive valve clearances. The noise quiets with increased engine temperature, valve clearances decrease same manner. Have a local tech investigate the noise.

Again, I cannot say without investigating if the noise is a major concern and safety issue. Excessive valve clearances make a tapping sound and usually will not harm the engine. However, if left unadjusted long enough, engine damage may occur.
