Motorcycle Repair: 86 kawasaki klr600, kawasaki 600, bike bandit

Question
hi mark---
i just picked up a '86 kawasaki 600 with 16,000 miles on it. I usually
dont buy bikes that old, but it was from a dealer
and anyway its in great shape. Everything is
cool on the bike, except i just started a tiny oil
leak around the gasket by the electric starter.
I guess the bike is just been sitting around for
so long that the gaskets are going bad, or rubber
seals are cracking. Should i tell my shop to just
go through the engine and replace all the seals/gaskets. What would be a fair price for that? am i going to find out there are no parts
available for my bike?
Thanks,
Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,

Get the shop manual and replace those o'rings and oil seal yourself. Your shop will love you if you tell them to do that. : ) Your wallet will better fit your pocket afterwards. Flat-rate in my city is about $50 per hour.

Visit "www.bikebandit.com" and "www.buykawasaki.com" to see microfiche parts, prices, and get shop manuals.

See microfiche parts here: "www.buykawasaki.com" or "www.bikebandit.com"

Once Kawasaki's site opens, click green text "Vehicle Information" from the menu, and then "View Parts Diagram" from the menu. A new page opens, select "Motorcycle" from the menu, (or enter your VIN for the “history” of your MC). Select the year, make and model from the menus that follow.

With Bike Bandit, click "OEM Parts" and then select your MC from the menus that follow.

There should be plenty of parts available.
