Motorcycle Repair: VAS Sensor........timing pickup, nose cone, fxdl

Question
1998 FXDL ...noticed that I had some of the potting material from the timing sensor leaking out the nose cone. Removed cover to get a closer look...yes it is the sensor that is starting to melt a bit...bike still runs as expected. Should I be looking to other areas that are causing this, such as engine overheat, shorted to ground , etc. ? The dealer wants $170, #32404-96. I have found a few of #32448-95A FLT, FXST 95 & up for a lot less on ebay and other sites...new or used ? What is the real diference between the 2 numbers if you know...just length of wire, carb vs. EFI, etc. ?
Thanks in advance,
Phillip

Answer
I have seen a few of these melt a little, but not to your extent. Check your timing to make sure you are not running to retarted. That will cause more heat.
As to the different numbers, I am not sure, but I think it has to do with where the pickup opens and closes the ignition and also has to do with timing.
Good luck and happy riding
