Motorcycle Repair: Straight exhaust for Virago XV1100, drag pipes, dial a jet

Question
Mark:  I have a 1992 Virago XV1100 with approx. 55,000 kms.  I am currently running a set of Jardine Slash cuts and a K&N filter.  I purchased a Dynajet kit but didn't install it as the bike runs perfect the way it is without re-jetting.  My problem is that when my wife rides with me she is constantly concerned about burning her boot on the muffler ( she has done this twice before.)  I've added another set of pegs to help her but the concern is still there.  My solution was to purchase a set of Samson Shogun drag pipes which I am about to install.  My concern is whether the bike will run poorer, will I need re-jetting and should I purchase and install the optional baffles?  I've talked to 2 other Virago 1100 owners who have the same system and they say that other than being real loud (which I don't really need, it's loud enough as it is), the bikes run perfect.  One fellow who uses a dial-a-jet system had his bike dyno'd and it checked out fine?
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

David

Answer
Hi David,

The only way to tell if the carburetors need tuning is by reading the spark plugs and feeling the powerband. In other words, does the engine pull strong and smoothly throughout all throttle opening positions? if, not tuning is necessary. You want to have light shades of brown on plugs for optimum performance.
