Motorcycle Repair: Valve Adj. 86 Honda TRX250 2WD, honda trx250, bikebandit com

Question
There is a clicking at idle.  Not a ping a click, think it might be my valves.  How do I verify that my valves are adjusted properly?  Looking for specs for valve clearances and how to adjust.
Could it be low octane fuel?  I guess I'm looking for any ideas or opinions.  I'm not looking to spend too much money on this old bike, kids drive it mainly, but still is a good old bike.

Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Tony,

The ticking or tapping sound is likely excessive valve clearances. This is very common. Too little or zero valve clearance causes engine damages. Excessive clearance causes noise. All the same, shouldn't let it go too long.

Get a shop manual and follow instructions for checking and adjusting clearances. Find manuals at "www.bikebandit.com"
and maybe on Ebay.

I don't have the specs for this MC.
