400 ex quad please help. i left the ignition key on all night while charging the battery. then only got a rapid clicking sound with an occasional turning over of the motor. ordered the part that was clicking i assume the cylinoid, however the factory calls it the switch assy. hooked up as the old one, battery fully charged, nothing... not even the neutral lite?
Answer -
Jay, the clicking noise was a 12v solenoid trying to operate at 6-7 volts, probably. A good battery charge should have brought it all back to life again.

If you have NOTHING, then you have to get a test light and start at the battery (assuming that you didn't put it in backwards and blow the electronics) and work out to where the juice stops.

There is a 15 amp fuse near the starter solenoid/battery box area that may be blown. Check that first. If it is blown and it blows another one immediately, then something has shorted out in the electrical system. You will need to get some direct help for that kind of problem as the short could be from a number of sources.

BILL, thank you for your time and knowledge, i have already checked the 15 amp fuse that you refered to, prior  to writing you, sorry for the omission. as far as the good battery charge fixing the problem origionally, as stated, the bike was an a trickle charger all night the nite prior. when an attempt to start it yielded the clicking, i turned the charger up to function as a jump with no notable change in symptoms. incedintally, going from the batt. to cyliniod to 15 amp fuse, next in line is a plexus of wires joining together with male/female clips, 2 of which, that come from the other direction than the 15 amp,  do not have mates.. both are female and are not the ones that connect to the cylinoid. if any of this helps please respond, and thank you again jay

This shows exploded views of the parts for your bike. Sign up, log in and choose your model/year, etc.

The power flow is:
NEG- BATTERY-POSITIVE term-Solenoid-Starter motor. To activate the starter, you have to have 12v at the large post from the battery. The starter button activates the primary windings that create a magnetic field which closes the two large contacts inside, making a connection to the starter motor. You can jump across the two large posts (you get a big spark)bypassing the solenoid altogether and that should allow the starter motor to turn over. If not, then you have either not enough cranking amps from the battery or you have a bad starter motor.

If your battery is older than a year or so, the trickle charger may just be putting a surface charge on the battery, but there is no cranking amps left in it. Try another battery. If it is still buzzing then check for any safety switches that are not being activated or you may have damaged the starter motor (somewhat unlikely).

I don't have a wiring diagram for this bike, so don't know how the ignition switch is connected into the circuit. Leaving the switch on overnight could have damaged the internal switch contacts, too.

That's about all I can tell you from here.
