Motorcycle Repair: oil spew, puff of smoke, ball spring

Question
Johnny,
I installed the modded gear from Baisleys. Fairly simple, I lubed it and lined the timing marks, checked for clearance, new gasket, etc.Problem is, when trying to start, the engine is turning over and then a loud "crank" followed by a puff of smoke out of the carb, and the motor wont statt. Are the gears binding? What should i do? Thanks man, I appreciate your help
Dennis

Johnny, I installed another check ball on top of the spring and changed the oil and filter. Still, the oil is constantly seeping out of the crankcase vent even when idling.  Also, the oil pressure light is dimly lit. What do you think>
Thanks man.

Question -
Johnny, I have a 92 dyna glide with 20K miles and no engine mods other than a jet kit.  The engine vents from the crankcase and not the heads.6 years ago I put a hi-flow intake and re-routed the crankcase vent with a small filter and attached it to the transmission door.  Just recently, it has started to spew oil when riding for extended periods over 2500rpm, and it does not spew when cranking. (after an hour the entire right rear is covered in oil).  Could it be a clogged or faulty filter or something more severe. Also, a friend mentioned the oil screen maybe being clogged. How do I get that thing out?
Thanks for your time and any help you offer.

The check ball on the oil pump is letting oil pass it and is filling the crankcase full of engine oil. Install another check ball on top of the check ball spring to give the check ball on the bottom of the spring more tension and pressure. I would start there first. The tappet screen is not pluged up or your tappets would be very noisy.  Johnny

then the next thing to do is install a JIMS Steel breather gear mod by Dan Baisley in Portland OR.  His shop name is Baisley Hi-performance. This gear will stop that oil sumping.  Johnny

Answer
Are you sure you have the timing correct. It could be out 360 degrees. I start with checking the ignition timing. Did you measure the breather gear washer/ With gasket in place and breather gear on. Using a stright edge ruler there should be at least .012" gap between ruler and washer. If you used a to thick breather washer it could be binding in the cam cover.  Johnny 602-705-7474
