Motorcycle Repair: honda ct90 wont start, honda ct90, motorcycle batteries

Question
Hi,I just purchased a 69 honda ct90, I took it for a short ride and it just stopped running. The horn + lights did work but not now.I was wondering if a honda 90 would run with a dead battery? can I charge it? or if I bought a new battery would it run just until the battery runs out of juice. Thankyou Dave.

Answer
Dave, Just like your car, CT90s are battery-powered. They have a permanent magnet charging system, but need the battery as a reservoir/load for the system. Sometimes you can get enough juice from the charging system to tickle the coil enough to fire, but any other electrical load (neutral light, brake light, etc.) will suck it down to zero quickly.
Motorcycle batteries must be charged a less than 1amp. All the 90s had 6v systems, so use the correct charger. If the charging system is fully functional, then a new battery should last just fine. If the wiring is damaged or the rectifier is bad, then you will just run the new battery down again.
www.helminc.com or www.motorcyclebooks.com should be able to get a manual to you.
