Motorcycle Repair: removing carbs on 87 goldwing interstate, wingthings texas, honda service

Question
dear mark,
i am trying to rebuild the carbs on my '87 goldwing interstate.  i have everything disconnected but the carbs will not slide out like the clymers book says it will.  i think i am getting caught on the cooling pipes.  do i need to remove them also?
i am not pleased with the lack of detailed pictures in a clymers manual.  is there a better one or a web site to find better details because i am restoring this bike and have a lot of work to do?
when a manual refers to right or left is that sitting on the bike or facing the bike?

Answer
Hi David,

Q:  i have everything disconnected but the carbs will not slide out like the clymers book says it will. i think i am getting caught on the cooling pipes. do i need to remove them also?

A: Try removing carb tops and vacuum pistons from right two carbs and then manuever carbs such that they slide over and out. (Look at Randakk's website for carb removal).

Q: i am not pleased with the lack of detailed pictures in a clymers manual. is there a better one or a web site to find better details because i am restoring this bike and have a lot of work to do?

A: We get what we pay for. I recommend Honda Service Manuals. I'll list several useful websites below that will assist you.

Q: when a manual refers to right or left is that sitting on the bike or facing the bike?

A: Always while sitting in the saddle unless otherwise noted.
