Motorcycle Repair: High RPMs while stopped., vacuum hoses, intake leaks

Question
2005 Kawasaki ZZR600, 2600 miles.  I have taken it to my
dealer's shop once for the 600 mile scheduled maintinence and
just lubed the chain and cleaned the air cleaner.

My trouble is that lately, as I come to a stop, I notice it the RPM's
remain between 2000 and 2500 . This seemed kind of high.
When I pulled it in to my parking spot after my day of riding, it
stayed stuck at 3000.  It wont drop unless I gun the throttle
(which I understand is a bad idea in most cases).  This symptom
seems to diminish my engine braking power and has me revving
high in between shifting gears.

How can I fix this and what may have caused it.  I would
definitely like to remedy this in the future, especially if it is
something I may have caused being a new rider.  This is my first
bike and I have never met any other riders so I am really learning
the hard way as I go.

Answer
Hi Justin,

The source of the problem may be a leak in the intake such as a vacuum hose, or the idle adjustment set too high, or carburetor synchronization is off.

Check for air intake leaks by spraying a solvent-like product (brake cleaner, WD40, carb cleaner, etc...) around vacuum hoses (petcock) and carbs. Engine rpm's will raise or drop depending on the spray product used.

Check idle adjustment by turning adjuster knob.

Check carburetor sychronization by using Mercury or vacuum type carb stix (synch tool). Find these at www.motionpro.com

Get the adaptors, too.
