Motorcycle Repair: 82 goldwing timing belt, wingthings texas, airevac

Question
Hi.
Noticed you have sent helpful e-mail out to other people on how
to replace timing belt on gl 1100.  Covers are off, I am ready to
start.  Probably does not need it (26,000km) but because of age
and since I have rad off to do a thermostat and a good cleaning
thought I might as well.  Anything else I should do while these
parts are off?
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Doug

Answer
Hi Doug,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I usually reply within hours.

Belts are easily changed. I'll list a few resourceful GL related websites below. The procedure is there (if you don't already have it). Other good intel can be found at these sites, too.

Other than cleaning parts while off and replacing worn gaskets, I think you're good to go. If you want my test and repair information files, send me an email address. I'll return several files to assist you.

I do recommend the use of a special tool to purge the cooling system of air. I use the "Air-Evac" tool manufactured by MityVac (the brake bleeding tool company). See this tool here, or type keyword: mityvac airevac.

It is critical that the cooling sytem is air free. Burping the raditor doesn't do the task. If an air bubble is trapped at the water pump, coolant will not circulate. Also, air in the system causes the coolant to boil at much lower temperatures than designed; i.e.: 225 F compared to 245 F.
