Motorcycle Repair: Fuel Gauge, 1986 honda goldwing, bike bandit

Hello Mark,  
I have a 1986 Honda Goldwing GL1200 Interstate.  Upon filling the tank the fuel gauge reads full for about the first 40 or 50 miles and then registers empty even though the tank is almost full.  At each fill-up the gauge works again for the next 40 miles or so then drops to empty.  I recently purchased the bike and the previous owner had the problem for a number of years.  Thanks for any input you can give.  Neal

Hi Neal,

The fuel sensor unit needs replaced. See Bike Bandit or cut and paste the link below. Look at part #18. You may find it cheaper on Ebay or other on line resource.
