Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow winter storage - to drain or not to drain...carbs, honda shadow ace, two different things

Question
Chris, this is my first winter season with my first bike...a '98 Honda Shadow ACE.  I've heard two different things with regard to storing by bike for the winter.  One is to add Sta-Bil to the fuel tank, the other is to drain the carbs.  As a not-so-mechanically-inclined person I might quickly op for the Sta-Bil option, but don't want to do it if it's not the right thing.  If draining the carbs is what you recommend how does one go about doing it?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Daryl.
Prepping a bike for winter storage isn't at all complicated.

1)  Drain the fuel tank.  Use the gas in your car and put fresh gas in the tank when you prep the bike for riding season, not before.

2)  Remove the fuel from the carbs.  Either by draining the fuel with the drain screws, located at the side of each float bowl, or run the bike til the floats are empty. (after the fuel has been drained from the tank first)

3)  Remove the battery and place on a seasonal charger or connect a seasonal charger up to the battery while still on the bike.

Good luck.
